(in Greek) |
Spata (Greek: Σπάτα), is a suburb in the eastern part of Athens, Greece. The suburban city is situated almost in the heart of the Mesogeian plain. The view of Hymettus is to the west, the southern mountains to the east and the smaller mountains lying east. Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport covers the northern portion of Spata and was sometimes known as Spata Airport. Spata is passed by a road linking west to Paiania and east to Artemida and the interchange for Attiki Odos (number 6) is located west. It is located S of Pallini, SW of Rafina, W of Rafina, about 11 km N of Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, and about 22 km ESE of Athens.
The area around Spata are made up of residential, urban areas. The farmlands are around Spata and can be seen from the airport. Suburban housing arrived in the 1980s and the 1980s. In 1995, the northern portion began construction of the larger airport of Athens which lasted until March 2001. Parts of the runway are in Spata. The rest are in Koropi and Markopoulo. The Attica Zoological Park or the Attica Zoo began construction and was first opened in May 2001. It is Athens' and Greece's largest zoo.
Spata has few schools, lyceums, a gymnasium, banks, a post office and a few squares (plateies).
